CCTV cameras to be installed at 250 locations across Goa

Taking note of the recent trend wherein CCTV footage has been of great help for police to crack down on criminal cases, traffic violations and terror activities, Goa police plans to install 660 high resolution CCTV cameras at 250 locations across the state.

The cost of total project is estimated to be around Rs 20 crore. Inspector general of police (IGP) Sunil Garg said that the proposal is in the process of being sent to the government.

Presently, 96 cameras are in operation at different location across the state, including Panaji, Margao, Vasco, Quepem and Sanguem. CCTV footage has aided the traffic cell in issuing 18,280 notices to traffic violators, besides helping the police crackdown on many criminal cases. Recently, Panaji police were able to solve the St Inez chain snatching case.

A police source said that there is a need to install CCTV cameras at 250 locations across Goa, which should be remote controlled and capable of capturing traffic flow and abnormal incidents. The same image, in real time, should be transmitted through a high bandwidth optical fiber-based network to the respective traffic control rooms at Panaji and Margao, all police stations across the state and security units, the source added. Police planned to install 175 CCTV cameras in Panaji, 170 in Mapusa, 82 in Calangute, 27 in Ponda, 90 in Margao, 75 in Vasco, 12 in Dabolim airport and 31 in Curchorem. The cameras would be of two types – pan tilt zoom and fixed.( Source: Security Today)

A senior police officer said that they have requested for high performance digital video recording with advanced video content analytics, including motion and abnormal event detection, intrusion detection and stationary vehicle detection.

It would enable the surveillance team to prevent or respond to incidents in real time and also effectively investigate and reconstruct situations for subsequent analysis, he added. There are also demands from police sources for night cameras and a facility of making announcements through speakers in control rooms or police stations.
